Pune: The Pimpri Chinchwad crime branch seized seven country-made pistols and five cartridges with the arrest of four men, including an arms dealer from Ahmednagar district.
Police investigations revealed the arms dealer, Ankit Bhaske, had brought the firearms from Umarati in MP. “In the last two years, Bhaske has smuggled at least 10 firearms from MP to Maharashtra,” an officer from the Pimpri Chinchwad crime branch told TOI.
Police constables of the crime branch Ganesh Sawant and Sumit Devkar received a tip-off that a criminal on police records, Arjun Suyavanshi (20) of Alandi, would be going to Markal village with a firearm on April 28.A team led by senior inspector Balkrishna Sawant laid a trap and took Suryavanshi into custody. “We recovered two country-made pistols and two cartridges from him,” Sawant said.
Bhaske’s name was revealed during Suryavanshi’s questioning. “The accused also revealed that a criminal on police records, Tushar Bacche (31) of Moshi, had purchased firearms from Bhaske,” Sawant said, adding, “We have recovered two pistols and a cartridge from Bacche.”
Sub-inspector Bharat Gosavi of the crime branch said Bhaske was in the custody of Ahmednagar police in a firearms case. The Parner police had recovered two firearms from him. “We took Bhaske into custody from the sub-jail at Parner in Ahmednagar district. We have recovered two country-made pistols and a cartridge from him,” Gosavi said.
During questioning, Bhaske said he had given one more pistol to a daily wage worker at Nanekarwadi in Khed taluka. “We arrested Kamal Rathod (26) and recovered that firearm as well. Bhaske had told Rathod to sell it.”
Gosavi said the crime branch had recovered seven firearms and five cartridges collectively worth Rs2.85 lakh from the four arrested men. “Bacche used to purchase a firearm for Rs20,000 and sell it for Rs40,000.”
